In keeping with this year’s theme of “The Art of Performance,” WCMS is holding a series of performance classes during 2024-2025 for students of all ages and experience levels. These performance classes are designed to give developing musicians an opportunity to gain performance experience in a very low-pressure, supportive environment. No audience is present, only the participants and the faculty host. The host provides guidance and works with each participant to help them have the most comfortable and positive performance experience possible.

The first performance class was hosted on October 25, 2024 by Sylvie Zakarian, chair of the Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion Department. Here are a few key insights she shared with the participants.

The Art of Performing = The JOY of Performing

Performance is about being true to yourself and sharing something special with others. It is also about being vulnerable with your audience and allowing them to be vulnerable with you. And finally, performing gives you a chance to communicate through music.

Performance Routine/Checklists

Even though performing should be joyful, that doesn’t mean you won’t be nervous! But there are things you can do to help yourself to feel as prepared as possible and minimize pre-performance anxiety.

  • Be ready with your repertoire two weeks prior the concert event.
  • Visualize having your performance go well, and tell yourself that it will go well.
  • Do a run-through of your repertoire in your performance clothes. Practice how you will “walk on the stage,” smile, and take a bow at the beginning and at the end of the performance.
  • Play your repertoire in front of musician and non-musician friends.
  • The night before the performance, read through your music away from your instrument.
  • The day before your event:
    • Do not over-practice
    • Use a writing journal, drawing board, or take a calm walk outside to focus your thoughts

Try This Narrative to Encourage a Successful Performance:

  • I am proud of myself that I accepted this challenge to perform.
  • All the extra practice is worth it for the proud feeling at the end of a good performance.
  • Performing all on its own can help me to become a better musician.

In addition, Sylvie shares: “I enjoyed preparing to present this workshop. On a personal note, it was a rewarding and interesting experience to see the transformation in our young participants into young performers by the end of the class.”

The next Performance Class will take place on Friday, January 31 and will be hosted by Yun Lee . Registration is currently open.
