Do you want to improve your skill and confidence in improvisation, including across changing or uncommon time signatures? Very often, challenges with improvisation don’t come from a lack of skill, but rather from being tied to traditional rhythm patterns that we learned early on, but may not translate well to the genre or meter that you’re playing in now.
This workshop is for any musician (teens and adults, age 14+) who wants to unlock new ways of understanding rhythm in order to improve their comfort and skill in improvisation. WCMS trombone teaching artist Seth Hamlin will guide participants through a series of exercises based on the method codified by legendary jazz percussionist Dr. Karl Berger. These exercises will help you to understand what it means to be “in the groove” and to think about rhythm in a more universal, fluid way.
Hosted by the Woodwinds, Brass & Percussion Department at WCMS.
Free for WCMS students; $15 for general public.
